This September in our Village

Basket of flowers and produce collected at The Entertainment Quarter Markets in Sydney.

HELLO!

I am so glad that you are here. How are you doing?

We are getting a ‘hint’ (and I say ‘hint’ because it’s Melbourne!) of Spring here and it’s so lovely. The buds are starting to form on my hydrangea macrophylla, there is new growth on my rose desdemona and my mixed lettuce is taking off (Watch how I wash and dry my home grown lettuce). I have also planted a new hedge of lobelia (string of pearls) in the front yard as a replacement for my blue barcopa’s as they were dying every two years. Let’s see what happens with this new trial!

And as for my Sir Walter Buffalo lawn; I have been going mad over the last few weeks literally on my hands and knees weeding this lawn to prepare for a ‘weed and feed’ this month so it is super lush and green for summer. I really don’t know why I have a lawn - it is just so much work! As much as I find weeding therapeutic and satisfying - not the lawn! It’s completely torturous and unforgiving! There are no prayers to fix it. I can calmly say to you though that I do love the feel of the lawn on my feet and lush green makes me happy. So for now it’s worth it. But, one day, though, when my daughter’s trampoline disappears from the backyard, and I have a bit more time, I will rip it all up and turn it into a produce garden with multiple vegetable boxes and a wood-fired oven. The silver lining is coming! And perhaps more work and worry. Who knows!

We are also eating lots of oranges from my mum’s tree at the moment. My daughter loves to grab a couple nice and cold from the fridge and simply juice them served with ice upon returning from her part time job working at the local bakery. I am hearing many people making jars of orange jam at the moment too! So good on fresh crusty bread with salted butter.

For a while now I have been wanting to broaden the Villagio offering to provide a place for more conversations, connections and sharing of ideas and discussions amongst our community of like minded women wherever we may live. Consider it our virtual ‘village square'. That place is now a reality and I am delighted to announce the launch of the Villagio Community Forum. This Forum will also be home to our Villagio Cookbook Club which is launching in October! All the details are below. Please join the Villagio Community Forum and I will let you in and say hello! Also visit our Cookbook Club website page to see what beautiful books are coming up for the next few months.  I so hope you can join me for this; it’ll be a lovely chance to catch up (albeit virtually) with each other.

I hope you enjoy reading This September in our Village. Stay well and hopefully enjoy a  little warmer and uplifting month ahead….
