This June in our Village

Hello! I am so glad that you are here. How are you doing? How can it be June already? Time is flying and I am loving it. So much is happening in my life right now and I am trying to enjoy every moment, “Take each day as it comes,” I say to myself.” One foot in front of the other. And try not to get overwhelmed. Just pace.” My book club is now in full swing with a lovely group of women in my friendship circle attending. One may wonder if it’s more about the glass of wine or cup of tea with some crackers, cheese and delicious chocolate at the start. The company, or perhaps the deep conversation about the book of choice with so many different perspectives shared. Either way, they are always special evenings. We recently debriefed Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus and there were so many ‘threads’ to discuss and dive into. I’m loving this book club idea - there is so much going for it on so many levels. And I love opening my house for it every 6 weeks. I am also knee deep in preparing for my first ukulele performance where I will be singing and playing in front of an audience for the first time. I feel quite ready to do this and am receiving support from Nerissa (our community ukulele leader) and our ukulele group. Such a lovely gathering with like minded people who really enjoy sharing and learning together. The singing and strumming is a bonus! The final flourish of autumn leaves are scattered across my lawn - I will treasure the last of them this weekend. I hope you enjoy reading This June in our Village and have a wonderful month ahead. This month in our Village Gather your Autumn leaves and nourish your garden. They will give your garden beds or compost pile a boost of nutrients. Or even better, share a wheelbarrow full with a neighbour. Consider supporting a local artisan such as Mimosa Botanicals, an Australian perfumery. Treasure receiving a superior product whilst supporting Australian business. Start selecting books to read through the cooler months. Pop them on your bedside table and enjoy the healing effects of slowing down. This month we are cooking a Sicilian Cauliflower Salad Sicilian Cauliflower Salad is a simple, light recipe. It is quick to make and stores well in the fridge. Just a few high-quality ingredients skillfully assembled together is all that is required with lots of opportunities to pick and choose what flavour combinations you like. I love adding tuna to my lunch to make it even more substantial. Grab the recipe card and watch me make it. I picked my first batch of lemons from my tree and they are very good this year! I love making a bouquet of lemons to place on my table as they are so pretty (see photo at the end of this newsletter). I always make a Simple Lemon Loaf cake with them. This month we are reading “Unfinished Woman”   I recently met renowned Australian author Robyn Davidson who wrote the international bestselling book Tracks. It’s the story of 27-year-old Robyn, who, in 1977, sets off with her dog and four camels to cross 1,700 miles of Australian desert to the sea. You can watch the movie on Netflix. Robyn has now released her memoir Unfinished Woman sharing her adventures high in the Himalayas, her love affair with an Indian prince, and her late in life reckoning with her own story. You can hear Robyn speak in conversation with Sarah Kanowski on the ABC Conversations podcast. This month we are meeting Amy Minichiello Baker and author, Amy Minichiello, transformed her little heirloom project, where people hand-wrote their cherished family recipes and sent them in the post for her to cook, photograph and feature on Instagram, into a beautiful cookbook, Recipes in the Mail. Today Amy hosts intimate events, makes incredible celebration cakes (this is my mum’s 70th cake) and shares her wonderful journey with us on her blog, A Mini Kitchen, and on Instagram @amy_minichiello.
